An exquisite, naturalistic, gold brooch by Ed
Wiener, most likely c. 1970s;
with large, deep blue-green, Chatham emerald crystals and three
beautiful, prong-set diamonds that rise from the leaf design; about
2-3/4" x 1-1/2"; marked: "ED. WIENER, 18K;" fine condition.
The Chatham emerald was a discovery of Carroll F. Chatham, a San Francisco scientist who discovered the secret of growing emeralds. Peter Macchiarini also used Chatham emeralds in some of his jewelry. The method of creating these beautiful emerald crystals continues to be carefully guarded family secret. The company is now under the direction of Carroll's son, Tom.
