ROACH2 STERLING & OPAL RING

Lovely handmade sterling and opal ring by Patsy and Bill Roach (Roach2); opal is mostly opaque with spots of pink and light green; blue; just under size 7; top section (oval) is approximately 3/4" long; marked: "ROACH2, STERLING;" fine condition.

"Roach2" is the mark and jewelry of Bill and Patsy Roach. Bill was the son of Ruth Roach (see above). Patsy's fascination with the jewelry of Ruth Roach brought her together with Bill and after their marriage in 1959 she began making jewelry, encouraged by her mother-in-law. Bill and Patsy created Roach2 (signifying their union) and began showing their beautiful, unique handmade jewelry in 1961, winning many prizes and purchase awards at the national shows in which they participated. Their work is in the permanent collection of the Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and museums in Iowa.  Bill died at the young age of 57 in 1996. STERLING BAR PIN WITH BEADS BY DAVID JONES

Ingenious little sterling bar pin with tiny green and red beads floating under Plexiglas; about 1-5/8" x 7/16"; marked: "STERLING" and copyright symbol; excellent condition.

David Jones received his Bachelor of Fine Arts/Crafts degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Kutztown and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Jewelry and Metalsmithing at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.  He has been studying at the Penland School of Crafts from 1988 to the present and has participated in many exhibitions throughout the United States and other countries such as a One Person Show ,"American Folk" in Asheville, North Carolina, 2000; an International Traveling Show in Sweden, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Stockholm, 1999 into early 2000; "ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS" at the Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco, 2001; "Once and Again" at the OXOXO Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, 2001; S.O.F.A. in New York City with Gallery 500, 2001; and many more.

He is represented by numerous prestigious galleries and is in demand for commission work.

Here is his part of his artist's statement:

I consider myself a three dimensional animator. My goal is to use the finest material both new and old to create functional and non-functional curiosities.  I look to the work of old drawing from, the Arts and Crafts movement, Folk Art, Modernism and the beginnings of the American Studio Movement and its contemporaries all around the globe.   The finished pieces look as though they may be old but are curiously 21st Century.  I search in unobvious places for materials such as antler, recycled copper (including existing patina), scraps of various woods – (exotic and not so), European Laminate, plus anything else that I notice a certain “richness” – to include in my work.  Recycled materials are more or less a constant.  I also use traditional commercially available materials such as Sterling, Fine Silver, Copper, Brass, Bronze, and high carat gold, among others.

RAFAEL OF CANADA COPPER PENDANT

Copper pendant with glass by Rafael Alfandary; pendant is about 3-1/2" long x 1-1/2" wide; chain is about 30" overall; marked: "Rafael, Canada;" nice patina; fine condition.

Rafael Alfandary was a recent emigrant to Toronto, Ontario, Canada from Israel in 1970 when he enrolled in an English class at George Brown College. As a thank you gift to his teacher he designed and presented a necklace to her. The striking design and movement of the necklace soon created a demand for similar jewellery from other women who were enamored of the style and originality. Taking up the opportunity that the life process had laid before him, Rafael set up shop in his basement and started production on the kinetic designs made of hammered brass or copper, and bezel set with natural stone or glass cabochons.

His work is very recognizable.....The chains on the large necklaces are as elaborate as the pendants themselves and balance it with an aesthetic symmetry. He soon discovered Murano glass which provided colours ranging from brilliant orange hues to the most earthy translucent purple I have ever seen (as if one can ever describe purple as "earthy"). He loved melting and combining different colours of the glass, and as such no two cabochon colours are exactly the same.....The rippled nature on the reverse side of the glass also created some amazing reflections seen against the metal backing through the top of the transparent coloured glass.

Rafael closed his shops in Canada in 1980 to pursue other business and personal opportunities but is now back in Toronto, Canada where he and his wife Eriko are creating clocks and his one of a kind rings.
